Why heat pumps are so efficient, what actually drives your power bill, and the simple habits that keep running costs low through an Auckland winter.
Heat pumps have a reputation for being cheap to run, and for the most part it is well earned. The reason comes down to how they work. Instead of burning energy to make heat like an old bar heater, a heat pump moves heat from the outside air into your home. That means one unit of electricity can deliver three or more units of heat, which is why your bill behaves so differently to a plug-in heater.
That said, running cost is not fixed. A few things move it up or down, and most of them are within your control.
The first is sizing. A unit that is too small for the room runs flat out trying to keep up, which is both uncomfortable and expensive. A unit that is the right size reaches a comfortable temperature and then ticks over gently to hold it. Correct sizing is the single biggest favour you can do your power bill, and it is decided before the unit is ever switched on.
The second is how you use it. Setting a sensible, steady temperature, somewhere around twenty degrees for living areas, is far cheaper than blasting it to the maximum and then turning it off. Heat pumps are most efficient holding a steady temperature, not fighting big swings. Using the timer to warm the house gently before you wake or get home beats cranking it to full the moment you walk in.
The third is servicing. A dirty filter or coil forces the system to work harder for the same result, quietly pushing your running cost up over time. A yearly clean and check keeps it operating the way it was designed to.
Finally, the model matters. Higher-efficiency units cost a little more to buy but use less power for the same comfort, which adds up over the years you will own it. We are happy to show you the running-cost difference between options so you can decide what is worth it for your home.
